Inside Einstein's Mind | Full Documentary | NOVA | PBS

Education

Retrace the thought experiments that inspired his theory on the nature of reality. (Premiered November 25, 2015) Official Website: https://to.pbs.org/4nTCfJk | #novapbs On November 25th, 1915, Einstein published his greatest work: general relativity. The theory transformed our understanding of nature’s laws and the entire history of the cosmos, reaching back to the origin of time itself. NOVA tells the inside story of Einstein’s masterpiece. The story begins with the intuitive thought experiments that set Einstein off on his quest and traces the revolution in cosmology that is still playing out in today’s labs and observatories. Discover the simple but powerful ideas at the heart of relativity, illuminating the theory—and Einstein’s brilliance—as never before. From the first spark of an idea to the discovery of the expanding universe, the Big Bang, black holes, and dark energy, NOVA uncovers the inspired insights and brilliant breakthroughs of “the perfect theory.” 💙 Help us bring the universe closer to home. Ya I always love how people who don't even understand Einstien's mind or probably anyones - tells you how he thought. What he did is come up with a better match model than what we have; but he was always looking for a full and complete understanding and model that works for everything and he never found one. That's because humans simply don't know it all, in fact we don't know that much.

I loved high physics so much that the civil engineering department gave a journal of high theoretical physics

I've always wondered why not describe general relativity using displacement instead of just saying curved space, sure it's curved but only because the space time is displaced, like a ball filled with air pushed under water, the water pushes back, space-time pushes back because it's displaced, the displacement causes the curvature

Video is from the very early 2000’s, but still very good. Gravitational waves were discovered over 10 years ago now…

Old guy here. I'm glad to see my pupil, Albert get some recognition. He was actually pretty smart as my student.

I have to say that as I watched the video, I am glad that you (Sean Carroll) mentioned "When we finally move beyond Einstein, it might be another singular genius that comes along, someone struggling in a poor school in KENYA right now that we don`t know about..." (50:30) . Beautiful cause am from Kenya.

All he needed was his brain, a pencil and a piece of paper. No smartphones, computers, or magical gadgets.

I refuse to believe that somehow empty space is making all these planets to follow a particular course.

I met a self taught mathematician, James “Heart Trouble” Murray, in prison. He designed a machine on paper that [physicists] came into the prison to examine his idea but left and never gave him feedback. I minored in mathematics at the Virginia Commonwealth University from ‘77 to’83. Math altered my criminal life. I told the manager of the International Student Center in New York that I studied mathematics to become a better criminal. He said, “You succeeded.” Actually I read and studied psychology of abnormal and deviant behavior, general and, human development, a prison class on sociology 101, and became a grammarian that allowed the manager of the prison print shop to assign me as the proofreader there, where state documents were printed. Finally upon release from prison, I attended VCU and got an undergraduate degree in mass communications and a minor in mathematics. I am still trying to learn calculus.

What an incredible journey into Einstein's mind! This documentary beautifully explains his groundbreaking theories, especially the concept of spacetime and general relativity. It's amazing to think how one person's pure thought could unravel such fundamental riddles of the universe.

Could the faster expansion of the universe be a natural consequence of fields under less stress and so exponentially expanding because they are unobserved? The mass is the same the area they cover is expanding as a consequence of less observation.

This video is a wonderful teaching opportunity. Einstein used everyday usable objects to firm his own ideas. Since he was a smart man. This opened the door for Einstein to communicate to the world in a way it could understand. Because he was a man ahead of his time...

I’m more astounded that they had a picture of Einstein as a child in the 1800s

I think you should make another video about black holes; I'm really looking forward to it.
