Sources & further reading: https://sites.google.com/view/sources-cosmic-crisis/ Our best theory of the universe might be breaking apart! The new data we're receiving from space telescopes is creating more and more cracks in our current understanding of the universe, and some scientists believe we could be standing on the edge of the next great revolution in physics. When did the first galaxies really form? How fast does our universe really move and why are the huge cosmic voids not following the cosmic principles? We're getting Astronomy 2 before GTA VI
Of all the crises we’re experiencing right now, this is by far the best one
The animation was INSANE this episode
Would be funny if we thought we are alone in the universe but the problem is just that we are in the middle of a fucking desert and everyone else alive lives in a cluster where they party together.
"All models are wrong. Some models are useful."
It always feels like paradigm shifts are just history of science. If a shift this big happens in our lifetime it would be awesome. I'm not in a field related to astronomy in any form but this still excites me.
so the universe is like an author screaming at its fandom "you got the whole story wrong"
(this was a 67 joke but its 2026) Edit : GUYS IT WAS A JOKE- Edit 2 : happy new year chat and most importantly HAPPY MEME RESET!
So unemployed came here in 13 second
as someone who is currently studying astrophysics, you have no idea how hyped this gets me not only will my field still be researched once I get out of college, but there may be a chance for me to actually make a big discovery or theory given enough time!
Man, what a time to be alive. If people considered Pluto being demoted a big deal 20 years ago, imagine what we'll get to see with a shift in scientific understanding of this magnitude.
I love that this channel frames scientific 'failure' or 'crisis' as a sign that the machine is working. We need that perspective more often! Also, that 12,026 calendar looks amazing.
My professor always said "to learn something new, you must first be confused"
Man I've missed you guys talking about space. The other topics are great too, but the space videos hold a special place in my heart.
2:14 "uranus moment" ... "first crack" _well played_
One of the coolest part about these cracks is that it isn't clear whether they're related to each other; they could be caused by different mechanism or the same ones, and we currently have no way to tell!
The analogy of "cosmic neptune" (theory is right, assumptions are wrong) and "cosmic mercury" (assumptions are right, theory is wrong) so beautifully illustrates the 2 "levels of shift" in our model of reality.
The more we learn, the more we begin to realise we don't know anything.
Born too late to explore the earth. Born too early to explore the galaxies. Born just in time to have to learn two completely different theories of our universe. Jokes aside, the fact that our understanding of the universe's lifetime could be completely wrong is by itself utterly insane. The universe could be older than we could ever imagine, the visible distant galaxies could stay visible and within reach for eons to come, and whatever possible endings we once had for our universe could never come to pass.
9:04 You could do an entire episode on Thomas Kuhn's "Structure of Scientific Revolutions", which first presented the picture of science mentioned here. He also can be credited with introducing the terms "paradigm" and "paradigm shift" into the common vocabulary. If you are interested in the Philosophy of Science, Kuhn's work is a landmark, and essential reading.
