GNU/Linux was the first complete open source and free operating system. The development of the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux OS is one that every tech enthusiast should know. From a hobby project in 1991 to one of the most widely used operating systems in the world, the development of Linux is a remarkable story of collaboration, innovation, and open-source software. Linux, for those that don’t know, is a community of open-source operating systems developed on top of the Linux kernel - the core of the operating system, responsible for managing resources, providing access to hardware, and communicating with other software. One could say it all started in 1991 when Linus Torvalds, a computer science student at the University of Helsinki, started working on the operating system as a hobby project. He was frustrated with the proprietary nature of existing operating systems and wanted to create a free and open-source alternative that anyone could use and contribute to. A kernel that could be independent of any OS and be used on his hardware, the new Intel 80386 microprocessor. But it began 22 years earlier. This is the story of the development of the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux operating system. I hope you enjoyed it. Making these videos about computer science history is quickly becoming a passion of mine, with many more to come, so if you liked this one, subscribe to the channel as I’m sure you’ll like the ones to come, like when we dive into the GNU project. Any and all recommendations for future videos are welcome in the comments. Until next time, y’all have a good one. 8:52 I wanted to do an "Erm, aktshually!" and looked up the release date of Gentoo and it blows my mind that it was released just 20 days after Arch. Gentoo was widely known as the Linux distribution for ricers and I've only heard of Arch much later.
"I use Arch btw" never gets old
"All started by one man who wanted to get the most out of his i386 clone, but didn't have enough money to do so." I really liked this one! 10:33

Linus Torvalds is a legend; he always inspires me to get back to coding.
i recently changed to linux mint after only ever using windows and it kinda feels like i have stopped being poked in the side by a sharp stick there is always something wrong with windows always a bug or a glitch it never is just peaceful and working normally but with less then 24 hours on linux my pc feels peaceful and it feels like i actually own it now instead of windows imposing its will on my pc
The oldest actively maintained Linux distribution is Slackware, which was first released in July 1993. Same year I got an Internet email address. I bought an official Walnut Creek disc set of Slackware 3.0 a few years later.
Awesome video. Love how you give statistics about how popular Linux is.
Was that penguin biting linus like the spider biting peter parker?
GNU/Linux is one of humanity's Greatest achievments!
2:24 "and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks". Little did he know... 😊
Wonderful! I am preparing to install Linux Mint Cinnamon, in place of Windows 10 which will be coming to an end next October.

Thanks. This makes things a little clearer for me, and it's a great at-a-glance reference. I will need to watch it again (next time not listening while working). And now... to your kindly linked: The Making of GNU: The World's First Open-Source Software
does Linus deserve Nobel price?
My favourite part was when he yelled “ITS LINUXIN TIME” and GNUed all over the place
Awesome historical documentary of Linux, really learned a lot and appreciate it
I love Linux! I am still a amateur user, but I will never go back!
What an amazing video. Thanks for the education my friend!
I remember booting my desktop off the two floppy version in 91. Had no idea it would get so big
