Why F1 Cars Have Wood Underneath

And this was introduced after we lost Senna

i though the words "F1" and "wood" go together about as well as "summer" and "school"

Thats the reason both mclarens got disqualified(despite Norris being P2 and Piastri being P4) in the vegas gp of 2025, cause of low rise height setup which worn down the wood plank beyond 9mm thickness

Formula 1 planks are primarily made of Permaglass, a glass-reinforced plastic/resin composite

I though it was to satisfy the ecofriendly shareholders...

McLaren should watch this to learn a bit more

It‘s also not just plain wood. It‘s laminated wood and as any motorcyclist with knee sliders can tell you, wood abrades smoothly. It‘s there so the cars don‘t wreck their carbon fibre monocoques when bottoming out.

So they use tungsten blocks to make that it won’t hit the plank, that’s why you see sparks
