Ben Kentish debates Richard Holden after his Tory colleague suggested Lucy Connolly was a 'political prisoner'. Connolly was convicted of inciting racial hatred during the Southport riots in a case that has generated a lot of debate. The offending tweet read: “Mass deportation now, set fire to all the f****** hotels full of the bastards for all I care … if that makes me racist so be it.” 42-year-old Connolly spent just 300 days of her 31 month sentence in prison, and was released earlier this week. And now Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is set to take her case to the US Congress next month. Mr Farage will testify before the House Judiciary Committee in early September, and told The Telegraph that Connolly's case would be “a very central point of what I’m discussing”. The committee is stacked with key allies of President Donald Trump, including chairman Representative Jim Jordan, and will discuss threats to freedom of expression in the UK. Farage's appearance on September 3 will come against the backdrop of tensions between the US and the UK over the recent introduction of the Online Safety Act. Upon Connolly's release on Thursday, the Reform leader said she is “now a symbol of Keir Starmer’s authoritarian, broken, two-tier Britain”. She has said since her release that she is considering legal action against the police. Connolly said she felt police were “dishonest” and claimed her words were “massively twisted and used against me”. Northamptonshire Police told LBC they are hoping to speak with Connolly soon regarding her allegations. No, she incited violence (and pled guilty to it). That’s an arrestable offence. Bob Vylan is under investigation for a similar offence. That’s one-tier justice. Or as us normal people call it, justice…
She was convicted of inciting racial hatred with culpability A and catagory 1, the worse case. The starting point was 3 years and it can be up to 6. In effect she was jailed for 12 months. So given the nature and her lack of remorse (she said she'd play the mental health card), the sentence was possibly leniant if anything.
