You've reached the end
I don’t necessarily have problems with idioms (like “cold feet” or “give me a hand”), but I will assume that if you say something, you mean it. So, “I’ll drop by tomorrow morning to discuss X” means I will literally be waiting at my desk for you to show up all morning. If you don’t show up until afternoon, or if you call instead of show up, it’ll throw me. (12-hour windows for technicians are THE WORST.)
autistic or not, if someone says "i just need a few more minutes" i think its perfectly fair to come back a few minutes later, as per their exact request
lol “wear socks and elaborate” is so effing funny. Well said.
"Precision saves lives, Trish!" I'm dying over here
My autistic brother's favourote thing is to switch up idioms, like "Too many cooks spoil the shed" or "Not the sharpest tool in the broth" its honestly hilarious, its a game he loves to play with family and staff.
One of the things that gets me in more trouble is that passive aggressive command starting with "Wanna" or "Do you want to..." For example, "Wanna take out the trash?" No, I don't. Then I get in trouble. WHY????? I answered the question they asked! Now, if they said, "Will you take out the trash?" My answer is, "Sure!" But even better is, "Will you take out the trash before I start making dinner?" Also, 'Sure!" Just because I don't WANT to do it doesn't mean I won't. But if you ask me if I want to do something, chances are I'll just say no. But then people think I'd refusing a command or order, when I'm not. Neurotypical people make no sense. But heaven forbid I respnd with, "Can you clarify for me? Are you asking if I want to do something or are you actually requesting me to do it because those are two different questions." Then THAT gets me i trouble because people think I'm being a smartass or overthinking everything. Because, of course... my understanding is the problem, not their poorly formed request.
I have a theory that high functioning autistics are more likely to enjoy puns. Partly because our first thought is literal we see more puns, partly looking for puns is a way to self accommodate, when we look for both meanings we are more likely to make the rational choice between meanings even if it makes us laugh at the discontinuity.
Today the 4th grade teacher said "hit that up," telling kids to join a study group. My one on one 4th grader's eyes get big and she raises her hand "Mrs. TeacherName!!! Mrs. TeacherName!!!! We do NOT hit!!!!😮" She's my favorite part of the day 😊
At restaurants like Olive Garden that offer cheese shredded on top of your food, when the waiter says "say when" i would actually say "when" when i decided there was enough cheese, and somehow didn't realize until VERY recently that you're just supposed to say something along the lines of "that's enough".....
I was professionally diagnosed with autism today, it feels so good to understand that some certain behaviours are caused because of this and I'm not broken or weird :]
When someone asks me to give them a hand, it's all I can do to resist clapping and saying "You did it!"
"Then wear socks and elaborate" "Oh! My bad, I don't do telepathy before noon" "You should have just said that? Precision saves lives!" I'm 100% stealing these 😂😂
I don’t have literal thinking this bad, but I do get the occasional thought of “if I took this literally it might be funny” because the only way I feel comfortable communicating is through humor 🙃
"Wear socks and elaborate" is amazing line
Not me being absolutely shocked that a few minutes aren't a few minutes.. Anyways I've always told people to come to me when they are finished doing whatever they are doing..so I'd not interrupt them again.
This is why I've struggled at every single job I've ever had. I look like a low support needs person, people are always "shocked" when i tell them I'm autistic, but then I do stuff like this. Do people just think I'm d u m b? Yes they do. Literal thinking is so difficult and not something I can ever overcome either because it's just my brain. I appreciate stuff like this so much.
People used to bully me and call me dumb because I sometimes misunderstood sarcasm.
Omg yup I will also converse in quotes from tv or movies my mom says that once she figured that out it was way easier talking to me
Tish is a ray of sunshine. Everytime she is in your videos it brightens my day.
I was listening to music with my 7 year old yesterday, and he was like "Mom, no, that girl cannot be on fire because she wouldn't survive that." 😆 So I told him it was a metaphor, and he was happy with that. I started teaching him about metaphor when he was 3, because I wish someone had taught me earlier on. It's very much like what you said: he knows what metaphorical and literally meanings are, but his tendency is to hear things literally.
