Confession
I returned about sixty dollars worth of scrubs because they didn’t fit, nothing dramatic. A week later I checked my bank account and nearly swallowed my own soul. I went from basically broke to suddenly six thousand dollars richer. At first I thought it was a glitch. Then I saw the refund details and realized the scrubs company had accidentally added a few zeros they definitely didn’t mean to add.

I was living with my boyfriend at the time and we were right in the middle of applying for a mortgage. I told myself that if the company noticed and pulled the money back, then fine. Not ideal, but fine. But I also told myself I was not going to draw any attention to the mistake by calling them, because that six thousand made our finances look a whole lot healthier during the mortgage process.

For a while I was convinced someone was going to knock on my door with a clipboard and ask me why I stole a corporate decimal point. I kept waiting for an email, a phone call, a correction. Nothing ever came. Months passed. Then years. Eventually I used the money toward our down payment and moved on with life.

It’s been about seven years now, and I’m still half expecting someone from the Scrub Department of Justice to show up at my door. But I guess the universe decided I needed that decimal shift more than the company did. I’m not saying I feel proud of it. But I’m also not saying I sent an apology card.
