I’ve been caving since I was little, and I can tell you there are some caves that are just plan spooky, Mammoth being one of them. About ten years ago I went on the four hour candlelight tour with my sister, it was fine until we got to the last room where the guide goes through that turn off your light nonsense then things got creepy. I was suddenly grabbed in an iron grip that completely wrapped around my upper arm, I’m average size so this hand had to be massive. I’ve never been more scared, cold, or drained in my life . But when the lights came back on a second later there was nobody near me. The other visitors were a tiny Asian couple half my size and my sister and they hadn’t experienced anything out of the norm. Later that night we discovered a large hand shaped bruise that wrapped completely around my arm and I could barely lift it. I’ve never experienced anything like that before or since. I’ve never been back nor do I plan on returning.
Fun fact,,, do a U.S. map with missing persons then over lay that with a U.S. map showing cave systems and check that shit out.. the biggest mass missing persons reports or where they thicken up is over cave systems and whole hella lot…
I went here with my family when I was a kid. I’m 63 now but still have some memories of that trip.
My parents took all of us to Mammoth Cave when in 1955. I didn't want to go in there; but, I went in with my parents, brothers, sister and a very large group. I was very happy to get out. Wear long pants, socks, easy to walk in shoes, and a warm jacket. It's cold down inside that cave.
We did a family road trip and stopped in Mammoth Cave when I was 12. We stayed the night there and got a chance for all of the kids to run around and explore in the woods near the cave. I'm 45 now and can still remember the eerie feeling of those woods. For a bunch of kids who grew up in an old growth forest in Michigan, you would think we would have felt at home but the older kids were all in sync and kept our attention glued on the little ones. It was almost like we could feel something wanted to reach up from the ground and take the little ones.
That cave is gorgeous, but because I am Cherokee I know what most of our indigenous people were to me and how the rituals were bad juju and so it is terrifying to what they believed in and I'm sure they conjured up the dark side or purgatory you'll would say hell.therefore we have bad spirits and weird noises, chants etc. My hearts go out to the many people who go exploring in these caves ,they might help science but I don't think that finding a portal that belongs to the dead would interest me .I wish you all the best
in my younger years i worked in the under ground mines around vicco ky. my home and when all equipment is shut down you can hear the coal breath turn out my light and yes your mind plays tricks on you i could hear my brother speak to me he had died 2 years earlier in the topmost mine explosion i soon quit and moved away from home and a new job not in the coal mines
I used to be a tour guide near Mammoth. Plenty of spooky stories to tell. There is something is all the caves here.
As a Appalachian Kentuckian! This is amazing place! I love my home! ❤
Love this show!!! I WANT MORE!!! And!!! Jessica's look while Phil explains his "critical eye" is hilarious!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I graduated North Hardin HS not too far from Mammoth Cave, it's absolutely beautiful and I'm sure there's something significant about that place 💚💚💚
This episode was absolutely thrilling! The exploration of Mammoth Cave's mysteries and its eerie guardian kept me on the edge of my seat. Discovery Channel always knows how to balance science, mystery, and adventure perfectly. Can't wait for more episodes of Expedition X! 🕳✨
I've never been to the main entrance but have been through Horse Cave and Mammoth Onyx Cave, both of which are part of the same system. It always amuses me when someone who can ordinarily see in the dark finds themselves deprived of that as that is literally my reality every night. I live out in the country and when it's dark out I cannot see as I have night blindness. On my best nights I can see shadows if there's bright moonlight but even on the clearest night I can't see stars in the sky, it's just black. And if it's cloudy out? Forget it. I can see nothing at all and indoors is the same as outside...black. Being used to it, it never bothers me when I find myself in blackness. My hearing takes over then...if I'm standing near a car, tree or building, it's like covering the ear on that side as the sound is "deadened" for lack of a better term and when I've passed whatever it is the sound opens back up...even if it's quiet out, if that makes any sense. It is even claimed that the caves in Southern Indiana like Squire Boon Caverns and the caves at Spring Mill State Park are part of the Mammoth cave system...and I've been to those as well. Folks take flashlights to Spring Mill as the caves aren't lit at all, but I take a kerosene lantern as I find that a narrow beam flashlight, while bright doesn't illuminate much around me, whereas a lantern will and it's funny how many folks start to congregate around you when you're carrying a lantern.
I went there years ago and did a 6 hour trip. Real nice exploration.
I especially liked the Melungeon woman calling herself Braveheart who gave them some weird cross of European white magic with random Native American additions.
Love the truck!!!
Caves are not only beautiful but change thoughts and depth perceptions. Many years ago while going through a cave in southern Missouri, walking and crawling through a passage saw what looked like something white and pulsating. Turns out the cave had an opening in the ceiling of the cave that let in light that at a certain angle reflected off of the water in the stream we were walking through. And as we were walking crawling in the stream made the water move causing the light to reflect and seem to dance, so we turned off our lights and watched till it stopped moving. Because we were still and not moving the water. Because of the little knowledge of caves hundreds of years ago, folks had many legends and stories about caves. Cool memories. Thanks Mr. Gates.
The sounds that they picked up in the cave sure sounds like a Native Chant
Where the hell did y’all get that old ass pick up truck?
