The Nutty Putty Cave Disaster | Caving Gone Wrong | Short Documentary

Nature and animals

#cave #caving #nuttyputty #johnjones On November 24th, 2009. John, his brother Josh, and 11 friends and family would go into Nutty Putty cave located west of Utah Lake. It was supposed to be a relaxing excursion into a new cave. What proceeded to happen next would turn out to be one of the most extensive rescue attempts in caving history. This video covers the (in)famous story of John Edward Jones and the Nutty Putty cave. John crawled into a tunnel in the cave and was upside down for 28 hours. I go over the accident, rescue attempt and aftermath of what happened. I wonder if a thin long chain, perhaps one with the hard plastic wrapped around them (used for swings and such), would have worked instead of the rope in the pulley system? You can slather oil on the plastic so it glides over walls as its pulled, and it wont snap obviously because its chain. The carabiners screwed into the rock also needed to be screwed in better or moved if they fell out. If John screamed from his legs being pulled, they coulda wrapped a sweater or something around his ankles to reduce the pain, and someone could have administered intravenous pain meds prior to the pull. Once they start pulling its game on, tension has to be maintained, and it doesnt matter if John screams in pain. Life or death situation here. Also I do think slathering John himself in oil would have helped. Friction coming out of that hole would add many pounds of resistance. I woulda poured it down all around his legs and the rock he was laying on. Mash that shit all under his legs and pour the bottle down there. Then switch gloves and signal the rest of the team on the pulley to start pulling as you grab his legs and pull at same time. If there was no ability to get oil down there past his feet for whatever reason, you could pull him up some inches (which they did manage to do at one point indicating it is possible) to make space and then do it. Just my thoughts on how I woulda handled that. I think cutting the rock to make space is largely a waste of time unless there's completely necessary spots that needed to be cut. The pulley system 'should' (in theory) have worked. Also, with a chain wrapped in plastic, you don't have to worry as much about friction from it hitting walls and you might not have even required the carabiners screwed into the rock, it aint going to break.

Cannot imagine the first 10 hours of excruciating pain from being upside down that long until he finally passed out, i once was held upside down for a challenge and after 10 mins my eyes were blood shot and my brain felt like it was 50kgs

I'm fascinated that some people don't have a mechanism in their brain telling them not to do this.

Brandon kowaliss the rescuer who's picture is of him in the thumbnail at beginning wrote a report of what happened that same day after john died. He was the person to see john. He said even of they pulled john out of the vertical situation theres was no way that he would bave been able to back his way out. Hes too big. Brandon said john was never getting out. But that didnt stop him from trying and he brought a jack hammer down there too.

Can never understand why people do this. Putting yourself at dangerous risk go crawling through tight caves is utterly madness

That had to be so horrific to endure. To remain stuck like that and to even try to stay calm tells you how strong he really was.

I can’t imagine being stuck in a tight space knowing you will never get out. The anxiety would be horrendous.

You've got to wonder why they didn't just... block off entrances to unmapped, dead-end section's like Ed's Push. If it's not safe to map, it's not safe to go into recreationally. But then again that whole cave was a deathtrap, so it probably would only have prolonged the inevitable.

There's a HUGE difference between lasting/surviving 27 hours upside down and going through pure torture for that length of time! This dude went through straight torture!!!

The angry cavers in Utah were heartless. They were selfish and entitled and how dare they shut down their adventure land permanently? It is just unbelievable!

It's weird to think about all the times he went in caves as a kid, laughing, having so much fun with his brother and his dad. He had no idea that one day it's where he'd suffer and die.
