Eras of tactics come and go. That's the beauty of it. Adapt or die.

Watching this video while City are losing 0-2 to Bodo certainly hits different.

The first time I saw something weird in football: Gnabry as a centre-back 🙃. He followed his man all the way back.

Football and Basketball have a lot of parallels in the way that they are evolving, with more and more positionless play being used at the top of the game

Atalanta did this to Liverpool in the Europa League and completely bossed them off the pitch.

The reason why it doesnt work like idid in the past, (which even pep mentioned) is because every single team learnt about the system and almost everybody started using it , and now everybody knows how to defend it.

Only counter solution i can think of to this new Direct style is an extremely high line with quick cbs to squeeze the space. It might be why Villa are doing better than normal as Emery adopts this anyway. Its funny how Bielsa was in the end ridiculed by the media in his 2nd Prem season for using man marking all over the pitch and now his philosophy is what others adapt. Often comes back to Bielsa for me. What a coach.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this might allow Football to "produce" players where dribbling is the most important strength again? A team doing this aggressive man to man against players like Neymar and Ronaldinho would be cooked as these players would win a 1v1 90% of the time. Especially with space to run behind the defenders

Maybe its because he no longer has De Bruyne, Mahrez, Rodri, Silva, Walker, Ederson and others at the peak of their game? Those players could win any game by doing a couple of world class passes.

It always happens in any competition, from traditional sports to esports. Once something is popular, everyone studies it and suddenly it's not as effective and the cycle repeats.
