there's no perfect tactic
That's why Rodri was so important for City in his ballon d'or season He would foul in the best places when the opponents counter starts
Tottenham did that for two years with Angie. It made for exciting and horribly inconsistent football.
And why are they playing high line? ❌ How to beat Barca's highline ✔️
Every tactic has some caveat and high line also does. Anyone who fail to recognise a weakness and adapt will pay the price for it.
I don't think the problem is the high line I just think the midfielders lack positioning and intensity to win the ball and instead of spamming offside traps the defenders should start tracking opposition runs
He should drop the 10 (Olmo) and add a pivot like Casado or Bernal. Also stick with a well-established center-back pairing (my preference Cubarsi and Christensen).
Inigo was so important to how this high line was done but he's gone so Barca can just play Cubarsi and Christensen
As a Barca fan, the single biggest factor in Barca’s defensive frailty is the departure of Inigo Martinez. He was the one who organised the defence, dictating exactly when everyone stepped up. Also he was immaculate on the ball and could pass and position himself like a midfielder. He was also left footed meaning he played at LCB and could fire in diagonal switches and let the right footed Pau Cubarsi play at his natural right side. While both Eric and Christensen are great with the ball, Eric isn’t as physical, Christensen has injury issues, neither is left footed and neither has the innate understanding of the offside trap like Inigo. Also this has caused Cubarsi to play at LCB but he can’t exploit passing angles due to being right footed. Araujo would be a top 5 centerback in the world if he played for Atleti, inter, or Newcastle but this system almost entirely focuses on his weaknesses, and minimises his strengths
Should Hansi Flick change his tactical approach?
You forget to mention they press high so if the defence line is not high and goes a little bit deep it will create huge space between barca defender and midfielder which can be exploited easily
I generally understand coaches want to keep their philosophy and should. But at this point is just they have to make a move during winter. Even flicks Bayern 6 champ szn have georezka who seems as best b2b that time.
Sorry, Caicedo should be between these two groups (just watch him in the buildup for the winner against Liverpool for evidence - the awareness and ability to pull that off was elite)
Flick just repeating the cycle. Compare Bayern 2019/20 and 2020/21.
Pedri did have the most recoveries last season tho. Plus Kane showed last season how to beat the offside, by staying offside
I agree with this. The offside trap is Barcelona's downfall.
Their opponents already try to exploit this from last season. But their forward were too good so Barca just always scores more goals
Sevilla destroyed Barca. Could have won 6-0.
Where is the answer to why are they STILL playing the high line? This is simply a basic analysis of the system. 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
Bayern did the same thing in ucl last season
