How to ANALYSE a football match (Step-By-Step Guide)

Thank you so much. I am the mother of a U9 (soon to be U10 player). I want to help him improve his basic analysis, but I have very little soccer intelligence. So, this is so helpful for someone like me.

You can just record your analysis as audio recordings on the phone while watching the match uninterrupted. After the match you can convert the audio to text notes.

I think the most salient point for me was the possession analysis - who is predominantly in possession and therefore focus on their dynamics while in possession and visa versa for the other team. Feels kinda obvious but it needs to be said out loud.

Formations and tactics are ok until you lose possession and are counter attacked. Then watch most teams panic. That's when mistakes occur in defence.

thank you! i barely have friends irl to discuss football with and my family doesn't watch it so i know the game less than most. been so interesting watching analysis of matches even if i don't completely understand it

Yup. Spot on. When you do these things, football is far more fun to watch. If your just watching it and not knowing what your looking at, it does get boring and that’s with any sport. One thing that gets me is when at halftime sometimes managers make changes that are not direct swaps and since I don’t know single teams players, then it’s hard for me to follow what he plans on doing. Of course I can watch, but it would be helpful I knew more before it’s played out on the pitch. Players from midfield are also swapped into defensive roles because they’re capable of being defensive etc.

Excellent!!!Another thing I like to look at is the oppositions back line- how high, how low. How they progress the ball, which of the 3 flanks( left, middle, right) is their strongest and weakest and which can I exploit. Lastly and perhaps most important, their key players. I've noticed that most teams have 2 or 3 key players whom once you shut out, gives you an even game, that is of you can shut them out.😅😅
