The difference between Super Mario Bros. speedruns and New Super Mario Bros. Wii speedruns is that New Super Mario Bros. Wii speedruns are four times as long, so naturally there's going to be more room for improvement.
Honestly the fact that you got so unbelievably close to the wr shows to me that you are definitely capable of beating it. Now, I don't really know anything about anything, but I think if you keep going at it, you will actually get the wr. Good luck!

It’s crazy how down to the wire these speedruns get. If you miss the button by a single millisecond you can miss out on the world record
