Dear Kevin, I've been growing tromboncino squash this year, and it has quickly become my new favourite squash. When it’s young, it works perfectly as a zucchini, but it can also be used as a winter squash once mature. I’ve also found it to be more resistant to certain diseases compared to other varieties. I think it deserves more attention, and you’d make a great YouTube video about it so more people can discover how versatile it is.

My mom used to make an “oven-fried” okra that was really good, but she’s gone now and I can’t ask her how she did it 😢 I seem to remember a dip in egg and then corn meal. I bet an air fryer would work. It isn’t hot enough to grow it in the Pacific NW and I rarely see it in stores, but maybe I’ll look again this summer.

Kevin, you mentioned a way to prepare okra without cooking it in oil. I love it raw in a snack I also add it in my greens when I boil them. Wait until the greens are ready and toss the okra on top and they will cook.

I actually never fry my Okra. I blister it on a pan alongside shishitos! Rub with olive oil… sprinkle with some good salt and pepper … so so good!

How cool-I didn’t know Clemson developed that okra back in the 1930s.

My mom used to make something she called okra no-gooey. You just slice the okra, along with onions, bell pepper, and anything else you wanna mix it with. Then mix together eggs, a splash of milk, salt pepper, and garlic powder. Add some butter into a pan and then add the eggs into the pan once the butter melts and then sprinkle the bell pepper/okra mixture into the pan evenly. Let it cook (no mixing) till a good portion of the eggs are set up, then flip it, trying not to break it. Kinda like a savory pancake, and eat it with soy sauce. You can also eat it on top of buttery rice but the rice was only something I added after my mom died. It was my favorite dish when I was little and I was a super picky kid.

Um my favorite way to eat okra is raw. I harvest fairly young and there is a "freshness" flavor that cannot be found in a grocery store orka.

Thanks for the okra tip about taking bottom leaves off, I am def going to try that this summer. I like to pan fry okra, I put a drizzle of olive oil in pan on medium heat, cut okra in half, lay in pan, brown one side - inside part - and flip, cook thru and eat. Doesn't get slimy, just delicious okra. You can salt, put herbs, etc to taste.

My favorite part of this video and channel is when yall do this and show what to plant in the area by the zone and not just SoCal.

The main reason I started growing okra was to make hot pickled okra. 😋. However, I especially love a recipe for succotash I found online. It has okra, tomatoes, corn, lima beans, and bacon. It is absolutely delicious!!!

Sadly, in my area, okra is a trap crop. I'd need a hermetically sealed container to keep the bugs, bunnies, birds and deer away from it. I am so frustrated by tomato plants right now. They're just starting to make fruit and now, I'm seeing 90s in the forecast. It was still dipping into the 40s at night a month ago and now, I'm lucky if it gets down to 68 by dawn.

One thing to mention about tomatillo, you absolutely need at least two plants to get fruit. Unlike tomatoes, they are self incompatible and if you just have one plant you wont get any fruit!

I’m from New Orleans, we always cook smothered okra with tomatoes, shrimp or shrimp and sausage or gumbo

Steamed okra if you like the slime. Izakaya grilled okra on skewers if you don't like the goo. (Quick high heat gets rid of the moisture just like deep frying, but grilling preserves the sweetness and green color). Bacon-wrapped, grilled okra are a neat party app.

Beneficial nematodes will hunt those squash vine borers. Saved my green Mayo squash and Luna pumpkins.
