It was just a handful of bars that didn't expect the influx of soldiers, they did not drink Iceland dry like the title says, plenty of beer in the liquor stores we have all over Reykjavík also it wasn't just US Marines it was a NATO excercise Edit: a more accurate title would be "NATO soldiers drink a few bars in Reykjavík dry..."

Having seen an ad, I went to Canada. The ad said 'Drink Canada Dry,' so I thought I would give it a go.

When I was stationed in Panama I went on a few missions throughout the southern command. We were not allowed to drink on deployments except for El Salvador and Columbia missions because they were over three month rotations. Before going on these mission the CSM would brief us and remind us that we may be the only Americans most of these people will ever meet and how you act will greatly affect how they feel about all of America. I took that to heart.

At the onset of Desert Shield we landed at Lajes Field in the Azores. It was our staging location for the KC-10 for tanker support. We drank the place dry in about two days.

Never been more proud to be a Marine.

We came home from Saudi (Airbus 380 west 520 passengers) and stopped at Sigenella Italy and sold out their package store- shopette basically the base.

We did that in Norfolk. Smoke everywhere.

Navy supply ship I was on in the 80s did that when we pulled into Diego Garcia. The next time we pulled in, they closed the package store on us.
