Google, Apple warn Bill C-22 could create cybersecurity risks

Tech

Google and Apple are among the companies voicing their opposition to Bill C-22, the federal government's proposed legislation aimed at making it easier for authorities to require firms to hand over private user data for investigations. An earlier version of the legislation, Bill C-2, was shelved after backlash over potential overreach into Canadians’ privacy. "When you build a backdoor into an encrypted device, anyone can walk through and cause so much is built on encryption we can't take that risk," Apple's Director of User Privacy, Erik Neuenschwander said. Mackenzie Gray explains why there's opposition to the revised bill and what tech giants are threatening to do. It’s all about control with the Liberals, to silence opposition. No different than Hitler in the 1930s.

Crazy that companies care more about our rights than our actual government

But seriously there needs to be a way to track bad actors. Obviously what we are currently doing isn’t working.

yeah... your data is like super protected right now and all policies are definitely true. It's super not data that can simply be taken by pretty much any host company. They are just asking for permission now. Sorry i mean testing your limited capacity of permission while you fight about the inputs about your personal details being protected. they are not.

You know it's bad when mainstream media can't put a positive spin on a terrible Liberal idea.

Remember when the CRA was Hacked? Remember when the RCMP was hacked? We need government to stay out of our business and do their jobs if they even know what their jobs are.

Maybe also report on where we can write to oppose this. I do not want my cyber security on my phones hacked cause that’s what’s happening. I don’t want anybody to be able to secretly take any of my personal text s and information off my phone and not even tell me.

Google an apple should STFU they’re the absolute worst for spreading your personal information all over the place.

Google and Apple are collecting your data and selling it, but they don't want to share it with the Canadian government for free.

With a majority government, especially one secured in frankly a somewhat undemocratic way, the Liberals have a responsibility to use the power therein to enact laws and fund projects that are undeniably in the interest of all Canadians but are being held back for some meaningless political reason. This is no such law. No one has asked for this, no one supports it, it is an abuse of power. How many cases have we heard about from the States about cops using surveillance tools for unauthorized personal use? Too many to count. Do we really imagine that the police in Canada will be any different? Not to mention the potential this opens up for criminals to hijack such a system for nefarious purposes. We do so much of our communication these days via the internet and the government should have no more right to access your conversations with your friends and family over the internet than they would in your own home.

I tell you we have to go off our devices. They only answer for all these problems. Gotta go back to old school ways.
