The others think the whole march was pointless, but Paddy insists there was a “spiritual” goal: from the top, they looked across Italy, burned off their anger, and came back ready to keep moving. Then Reg appears with a donkey, and the tone turns completely absurd. Paddy immediately decides the animal represents the philosophy he wants to teach the men. When Reg admits he got the money from the church collection tin, Paddy does not react with outrage. He calls it initiative, followed by more initiative. The moment works because it is pure Paddy leadership: exhausting, irrational, half-sermon and half-joke, but somehow still a lesson. The men wanted rest.
