For anyone wondering the real reason why they do this; for us, x-rays are super infrequent and the amount of radiation we get from an x-ray is not enough to do anything. Now, imagine that giving x-rays is your job, you'd be exposed to it multiple times a day. If you didn't get behind cover, you'd probably get some side effects from all the x-rays you'd be around. It's like a bartender serving drinks, they can't take a drink with every customer they serve, they'd probably overdose. Bonus fact: Sometimes during surgery doctors will use an x-ray to pinpoint or navigate during the procedure. They, of course, cannot leave the room when this is happening, as the x-ray can be on throughout the procedure. So, people present in the operating room will wear a leaded vest to lessen the effects!
