Auctions are tricky if you don't know the ins and outs. I used to buy machine tools and equipment, restore, and sell. I won a Bridgeport knee mill on a "no reserve" auction for $800. A steal! So once I won the lot, I bought a bunch of other things, totalling about $10k, because I now had to take an equipment trailer for an item this size. The location was in Salt Lake City, and I am in Phoenix, about 12 hour drive. The next day, I got an email stating that there was "supposed" to be a reserve on that mill ($3k, still a good deal), and that if I didnt want it at that price, it wouldn't be sold to me. I explained that I had bought other items on the premise that I won the mill and was making the trip anyway, and that if they wouldn't honor to sell price, they could eat it on the other $10k in items (about 40 lots total). When selling a closed down machine shop, its not being sold from an auction site, it MUST go because that building is needed to be sold or leased, and the shit can't stay. When the realized how much stuff I had bought, that they would have to move if I didnt pick it up, they quickly changed their tune. Moral of the story... know the game. Be willing to walk away.
