Dave Chappelle's mother, Dr. Yvonne Seon, worked directly for Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of the newly independent Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1960. Lumumba offered her a position after she graduated from college, and she eventually served as Secretary to the High Commission for the Inga Dam Project. This was the highest government position open to a non-citizen and made her the first American hired by the newly formed government.

Once the bill was passed, it was left up to each state whether to recognize that day or not. Arizona, was one of those states that did not want recognize it, and it almost cost them billions. The stste of Arizona was about to host one of thee most prestigious events of the year, the Superbowl. Paul Tagliabue was commissioner of the NFL at the time. He pulled the Superbowl from Arizona in boycott of them not recognizing that day.

He was the senator of Arizona when the state didn’t honor the MLK holiday and they lost a Super Bowl bid because of it. State voted quickly when they lost 200 mil because of it. Edit: this decision inspired Chuck D of Public Enemy to write the song “By The Time I Get To Arizona”
