I think its (mildly) similar to the word "coloured" in America that's a word you do not refer to people as. Look at how mad they got at Tyla when she called herself coloured. There its an insult, a slur, here its a racial group.

I am a 60 year old white South African who grew up with the K word being the most shocking word EVER ! I was very aware that white people used it and the pain and hatred of that word . Was very proud when it became illegal. It is a word that has never passed my lips . Now I must hear from South African young people that they are being taught this word in the US having never heard the word here !!!!!
