For those of you that, like Kevin and Angus, don't know what the condenser in an old points style ignition does: Suppresses arcing at the contact breaker points. When the points open, the condenser absorbs the sudden change in current, preventing a large voltage spike across the points that would cause burning and rapid deterioration. Enables a rapid collapse of the ignition coil primary magnetic field. By momentarily accepting charge instead of forcing an instantaneous open-circuit, the condenser shapes the primary current waveform so the coil’s secondary sees a high, sharp voltage pulse to fire the spark plug. Reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio noise generated by arcing, improving radio/telemetry performance. Symptoms of a failing condenser Weak or inconsistent spark, misfiring at higher RPM, hard starting. Rapid point erosion or heavy sparking at the points. Excessive radio noise (if points still present) or *poor ignition timing stability.* Tl;Dr : It's a capacitor
