ONe small point, for centrifugal impellers in hand driers and vacuum cleaners, they won't actually "blow backwards" if they are spun backwards, they just continue to blow forwards, but with much less efficiency (unless the impeller is designed with zero blade sweep (ie 90 blades, where there pumping efficiency is independant of rotation direction).
