Punk has always understood the business. He's a rarity these days. Everyone is just a Shawn Michaels clone, wanting to be on top whether they draw money or not. Who else on that roster is going to got to Steve Austin and ask him to Stunner them after a dark match? Most of those guys are trying to figure out how they can get a rub from Steve by having HIM let THEM hit HIM with their finishing move. Phil was such a big wrestling geek and understood the business enough to realize that many of the fans, whether they'd had a good night to that point or not, would probably come back and pay money to watch WWE live because they had that good memory of Stone Cold hitting everyone with the Stunner. Steve gets it, too. He knew he would get more out of the WM13 match with Bret Hart by losing. The amount of support he got for not quitting, getting up on his own and then hitting the ref trying to help him with a Stunner would have more impact than going over. Sometimes you get over by NOT going over. Psychology matters. There's no better way to end a WWE show with Austin giving everyone the Stunner, to this day.

Same happened with Rik Flair when Trips asked him to be part of Evolution. So I don’t think people necessarily forget stars when they retire but I think maybe the ‘nerds’ are too afraid to ask the legend to appear in their segment
