Undercutting the competition with a previously free service
1:37 - Frankly, I think that Welcome Tour would not have been well-received even if it had been free. If Drag&Drive had been a pack-in game on the other hand, maaaaaybe.
It is .. nice to see a Nintendo silver living this far into the year
i think what is going on with retailers, is that they all have the option to pricematch, meaning that if you can show that you can get a sku elsewhere for cheaper, they will sale it you then and there because they will lose the sale otherwise, meaning they are willing to price match digital, because of the pricematch mindset, it is a lost sale otherwise because somewhere else has it cheaper. this is not sustainable and will likely lead to retailer only selling codes in the long run.
I’d buy a game I really want for full price any day but there’s less and less of those for me these days that I get truly excited about. If I’m on the fence I wouldn’t pay $60 or $50 either
Value is in the eye of the “share”holder…
Longtime watcher here. Love the high energy of this video!
14:00 dude, you should do more bits like this one, you are really a good comedian, I still laughs at the one you did in the review of that Princess Peach game 😂👍
yoshi, star fox AND splatoon all being $50 feels like they still picked the maximum to charge. with the bigger titles being $50 you can go like "ohh okay not bad" and with the smaller titles being $50 you can go like "well, that's pushing it but at least it's *not seventy*". all sorta feels like marketing so that they don't have to do something more reasonable like *actual* budget games being like $35-40 and main titles being $50. ur nintendo, ur a billion dollar corporation. idk maybe the loss in profit could come out of the millionaires pockets who decide the price in the first place
Thank you for the positivity arlo
I love this comedian bit, Arlo, please do more 😂
That arm flex had me rolling.
I'm sure Splatoon Raiders would've been 70-80 if not for the recent bad sales.
Nintendo: "Hey, wouldn't it be funny if we make Doug give a speech about variable pricing, do nothing for like a year so he takes a ton of flack from the fans, then actually live up to that promise after he retires?" LOL
Okay, you got me, I laughed out loud at the ending.
That mic drop was something else
I appreciate Arlo's business and financial analyses. I would love more of that. But I also enjoy his other videos about gameplay and retrospective and stuff.
There’s no rule written in stone that declares “if other things cost more, games must also cost more.” If the Nintendo Vault was really running on empty, they could simply choose to spend less money on the games they make, and that would also bring their profit margins back to where they wanted. Nintendo probably spends way less money making their games than most AAA studios, and yet they were the ones who decided to try and normalize $80 for a relatively inexpensive game just because they knew we’d buy it. Companies will always push forwards unless we choose to push back.
I really hope companies are realizing that we can't afford games at $70, much less at $80. I've never seen the economy this bad in my 4 decades, and games are an easy place to cut costs as a consumer
