The secret behind this is an incredibly aggressive offensive shape, that is actually one of the best ways of defending in modern football. Another key shape is that of Kompany's head, evidence of a larger than average cerebrum, leading to the superior tactics.
And the craziest part is unc Manuel neuer dropping a motm performance in 40 years🔥
For me it proved once again what a difference a ball playing and attacking goalkeeper makes. The scene in the 61 min where Upamecano misjudged the long ball and vinicius is through, Neuer is already there to give vinicius as little space as possible. And proceeds to move him out to the right from where he wasn't able to score. Stuff like that doesn't show up in regular statistics because he doesn't even need to save the ball, but he's the difference between 0,1 xG and 0,5 xG. And he does that all the time. He also had a great game, but his positioning is such a joy to watch.
Bayern vs Real is usually not a high scoring match but always 100% Entertainment.
Brilliant tactics and analysis. The 2nd leg will be epic
A underrated feature of Kompany’s tactics is his shiny forehead, which confuses the opposition and slows down counter attacks
What I‘ve noticed was their defensive set up. Unlike the rest of the season, they did not press man to man. Upamecano and Tah usually staid back, which means if they pressed to aggressively, Real would have a one-man-advantage in midfield. This shows the respect they have for Real and their strength in the counter attack.
The best game I've ever seen from Bayern was at the Allianz arena when they played dortmund lovely club great coach and one of the best fans very nice people ❤ hopefully I visit again one day. Bayern have a lot to look forward to in the future with Kompany
When I was at school we didn't have these 'tactics' you speak of, we had the 2 fattest / tallest guys in goal and the other 20 players just constantly running after the ball.
They might be unstoppable going forward, but they were also not stopping Real from creating huge oppprtunitities every time they attacked. If Vini and Mbappe had their shooting boots on this could easily have been a 5-5.
Bayern are brilliant at sustaining attacks. Something I haven’t seen United do in years.

Das wäre ein echter Zündstoff für den DFB – eine Neuer-Rückholaktion wie damals bei Kroos.
Rest-defense? Sounds like an unnatural translation of Restverteidigung, but I’m no native
In my opinion, Bayern’s current mentality gives them a real edge over their opponents , they’re not the kind of team that goes into a knockout game looking to sit back and protect a lead, even against the best teams , they push forward and try to extend it , that mindset is exactly what helped them win at the Bernabéu. And it’s the same mentality that could carry them to another win at the Allianz. Sure, this setup has its weaknesses , but football always depends on the opponent and how both sides set up on the day. We even saw it against Freiburg , Bayern were playing poorly and losing until the 81st minute , then they switched things up , won the game 3-2. It shows how a single moment of confidence can completely shift this team. That’s why I think Bayern have the edge , of course, the squad deserves credit too , but what Kompany is doing with this team feels special , it’s hard not to see them pushing through to the semi finals with a win at their home ground. At the same time , Real Madrid can’t be underestimated, they’ll come to Munich hungry and fully focused on turning the tie around , but Bayern won’t treat this like it’s already done , if anything, they’ll play as if they’re the ones behind , keeping the intensity high and pushing forward the same way a chasing team would , even if they’re leading. This is what I think as a Bayern fan , this comment is based on pure analysis of Bayern as the season went on , I could not say the same thing for last season's Bayern , that's a fact.
Great MIA SAN MIA ❤
never been his early before
I’m stl worried when we high press’ if we are pressing so high den our player should play more aggressive not give dem any chance on their pitch
Kudos to you, so good analysis. Let's pray Bayern win the UCHL!
Besides the red card game (against PSG?) this was the most defensive Bayern, I saw this season. The last line of defense are usually only two, but against Real most time three and near to the end Goretzka came for an attacker to make it four.
