WARNING: Nothing you see is real, and your brain evolved to hide the truth?! Top psychologist Donald Hoffman reveals the mathematical proof we’re living in a virtual illusion, how space-time is just a headset, and why consciousness is the real code. Donald Hoffman is an award-winning cognitive scientist and professor at the University of California, Irvine. He is best known for his groundbreaking research into perception and consciousness, and is also the author of the book ‘The Case Against Reality’. ⏱ Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 02:17 Do We Understand What We're Seeing? 02:50 Space-Time 05:25 Are We in a Virtual Reality World? 07:37 Darwin’s Theory Suggests Our World Isn’t Real 12:53 What Would Reality Be Without Our Senses? 17:54 Simulations That Prove This Isn’t Real 23:15 What This Means for Living a Better Life 33:30 Understand Who You Are 38:11 Simulation Theories 43:04 What’s the Meaning of Life in This Reality? 44:43 Did Someone or Something Create Consciousness? 46:46 Where Does God Fit in This Reality? 48:11 Was Jesus Divine Beyond Any of Us? 52:43 Near-Death Experience and What Happens When We Die 01:01:51 Grief and Love 01:05:00 Light and Tunnel in Near-Death Experiences 01:07:12 Why Do We Suffer? 01:18:35 What Is Your Theory of Consciousness Proving? 01:24:41 Biggest Discovery: We Can Engineer Time 01:28:46 The Consequences of Your Findings 01:38:13 Mental Health and Illusions 01:45:23 How This Reality Helps You Deal with Life 01:52:10 The Nature of Reality and AI 01:57:41 What Would You Do If You Knew You Could Not Fail? Steven, I really hope you see this comment. I am schizophrenic, and i just want to thank you for touching on the experiences of people like me. I feel that when it comes to conversations like these, the perspectives of others like me are always left out. It means so much to me that you included us, because I think we are a part of the puzzle that often gets ignored. It made me feel seen, and I hope for any other of your listeners who are also schizophrenic or have mental illnesses that cause similar symptoms feel that way too. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. 💓
To be honest, this whole conversation basically boils down to one thing: we don’t know a fucking thing about anything.
Do you like these types of convos? If so please hit the like button on the vid - that’s the best way to vote for more like this ❤ also, would be doing me a big favour if you could subscribe - its free 🙏🏾🥲appreciate you - SB!
1. We don't understand our reality, our reality is virtual. 2. Animals perceive the world differently. 3. The world is more interesting than you can imagine. 4. Whatever you are transcends your definition. 5. Know yourself - be yourself. 6. We are all the same consciousness. 7. You can know yourself when you let go of all concepts. 8. You are divine as you can possibly be. 9. We transcend the headset but we choose to get lost in the rules of the game. 10. When we die we can speculate there will be awareness. 11. Everyone else is you so treat yourself with love. Love is all we need. 12. Working on the new theory outside space-time - already mathematically have achieved light through the theory of conscious agents. 13. When you really stare at pain it dissolves. 14. Love your neighbor as yourself - reality is far more amazing and exciting than you can ever imagine, never think you know everything. You don't need to prove anything. 15. When you are in challenging situations think this is what needs to happen.
Watching from Ukraine. 38 mins into the video, as the topic of simulation theory came up, a thought popped into my head that if we all create our own reality and our experiences of it are vastly different, then the notion of asking a friend for advice or life coaching or therapy makes no sense since the answers will not be tailored to your reality, but to the advisor's. So, the better way, perhaps, would be to sit in silence, having set the intention to receive the answer, and it will come to you. Or, maybe, sit in silence and don't even ask anything, but just go ahead and create what you need/want in your life with your thoughts and imagine it so vividly that you are able to feel it with your senses, and it will come to you in "real" life. It's just a thought. I'll continue watching this fascinating conversation! Peace.
idk if anyone else gets this but sometimes you read something at the exact right moment in life. for me that was The Law Behind The Laws by Owen Hermstring. like i didn't even expect much but it shifted something in how i think
It’s wild how most of what we think is “us” might just be pre-programmed responses we never signed up for. Childhood, media, culture, all layered over something we never even got to define. The scariest part? Elias Velin warned about this exact loop in 12 Codes of Collapse. Not just about AI, but how we’ve been mentally engineered to stay in autopilot. And it’s working.
Life is becoming too unaffordable and salaries have grown insufficient. It is indeed unfortunate.
i need a new headset
My son has autism. He often bursts out laughing. Once when he was a toddler & frequently laughing at a corner above our living room (& his bedroom door), we asked him what he was laughing at & he said, “the angels.” I still get goosebumps when I remember that. He was only a baby & had not yet learned about angels.
Every time I think we’ve hit peak AI hype, they find a new way to crank it up. Altman comparing GPT-5 to a nuclear bomb isn’t even shocking anymore. The scary part is how close all this is to what Elias Velin wrote in 12 Codes of Collapse the speed, the manipulation, the loss of human gatekeeping. And we’re all just here watching it unfold like it’s a movie trailer.
And I still have to earn money to pay to occupy space. 😂
The funny thing about this whole conversation is this is just him expressing HIS interpretation of reality 😂
As someone who spent 10 weeks in a coma, and almost physically died three times, I understand so much of what Prof Hoffman is saying. I spent 11 months in hospital in total that first time, and I was most at peace, spiritually, during that year and the following year even though I had been so unwell and my body was wrecked. I had let go of attachments, even to my children. I didn't love them any less, I just knew that I was a being inside a body but that body wasn't me, and that my human attachment to my children and others was a superficial attachment. We all exist beyond this reality. As my recovery has continued, my sense of human attachment has strengthened, and with that all the burdens. I don't speak in terms of my life being a virtual reality or me being an avatar but I know my human incarnation is an experience that my being is learning from, and that I am part of a greater collective or consciousness, which I am continuously linked to, feeding knowledge into and gaining knowledge from.
This was brilliant. Nice to have a break from the how to be richer, how to be more successful, how to be more productive, how to get more more, and more, and more and drop into deep conversations that are more likely to give what we're really looking for beneath the constant striving for optimisation. This is the most important content Stephen - well done for bringing these conversations to light.
I had an experience in my twenties when I felt like the headset came off and I saw the world without interpreting any of it. Just observed things as they were. All of a sudden I had this perspective of infinity both in time and space and everything we experience here on Earth seemed fake and unimportant. It felt like my consciousness separated from my mind and body and I was the ‘thing’ that I really am. Not a name, not even a human. Zero identity or ego. It was TERRIFYING. I thought my mental health was unwinding and I used all my strength to come back from it. I was never diagnosed with any mental disorder and never did drugs. But this seemed more real than real.
My name is Diane, and I am blind. I have no eyes, just sockets. I have no light perception. Yet, I can see photos that my husband looks at. Sounds really loony doesn't it? But I have also tried this with other people and it still works. Your senses are made to help you, however they can also stop you seeing or perceiveing reality. It's like having loud music on all your life so you can't hear the birds.
As a kid I noticed trees were living creatures, I started to question how? They couldn’t see or hear like I can, how could they even perceive reality? But that’s the thing, they “live” in a different reality. After realizing that, I started to notice that each individual organism on this planet views reality COMPLETELY different than one another. An eagle has crazy vision, able to see a mouse 2 miles away. A mantis shrimp has 16 photoreceptors compared to a human’s 3. A human has insane cognitive capacities compared to other organisms. A cow is able to ferment grass into animal fat. I could go on and on. No organism knows what the true reality looks like.
I am spiritual, I have a masters degree and have served in the US military in combat. The older I get the more I can relate to these subjects. The universe is a big place. The laws of physics that we understand, are just the tip of the iceberg of what’s out there. See you on the other side where all will be known. I firmly believe it’s all based on one word,,,”love”. Nice job on the podcast to both of you.
This comment section probably won’t remember me, but maybe someone scrolling needs this. A few months ago I hit a wall. Nothing made sense. I bought Manifest the Unseen by Luna Rivers after seeing it here on yt. I had no expectations. But chapter by chapter, it broke something open in me. Not motivation — momentum. Wishing that for you too.✨
