I was managing a high rise complex for a BIG oil company and several years in, my boss hired someone for a security shift supervisor position based only on "He was a cop for twenty years." Right away this guy said things that set off red flags for me. and eventually, I ran my own background check on him. It turned out that he had been a cop for 8 months, but that was 20 years ago. In the interim he had worked as a waiter in Los Angeles (I also found that he had worked one day as an extra in a movie, so he was hoping to be an actor). With this information in hand, I went to my boss, who took total responsibility for this loser. The final blow was when a security shift supervisor called me at home, on Christmas Day, and told me that the loser was sleeping in a vacant office. I called my boss and asked: "You want me to do the honors?" My boss sighed and said "I'll do it." The loser was fired.
Hiring the least bad person is DEFINITELY something to be aware of. Currently dealing with that consequence right now. 😒
