They miss the actual reason. It’s Arsene Wenger. One, Wenger made Arsenal a culture club because he is the one who brought equality to the forefront with black players, he removed the stigma that was associated with “foreign” players that ran rampant in England. He brought the french football flavor. But more than anything, even in the failed seasons he stuck to his values and doing things the right way, when clubs like Chelsea and City were spending black money to win titles. Yes, club did not have success but his values did resonate with a lot of fans.
Wenger and Henry's juice still has a lot of squeeze
Arsenal is MASSIVE CLUB. I have never seen a club win the Premier league and the world celebrate like that.
As a Nigerian, I started supporting Arsenal because of Kanu
I'm from brasil and I became an Arsenal fan back in 2010 because of the way they played, thanks to Wenger!
People forget Arsenal and Manchester United built the Global Premier league.
Thiery Henry made me fall in love with football. He was the reason I started watching football, and became and Arsenal fan, naturally.
Still feels like a dream
I’m a Liverpool fan, but Arsenal are by far the most popular sports team with Black people globally. They were like the first team in the last 1980s to win the league with core of Black stars, then came Ian Wright the first unapologetic Black swag player in the early 1990s. John Barnes came first as best player in England being black, which is why Liverpool have so many black fans, but he wasn’t as flamboyant or street as Ian Wright and he made Arsenal the Black people team. Then comes the Wenger era where you have the swaggest player of all time playing the saggest football of all time with at times an all black team of every type of black from Africa, South America, Europe and England and that solidified them as the team most black football fans support globally.
Arsenal is also one of the biggest clubs that isn’t named after a geographical location (along with Juventus), so global fans are attracted to an idea instead of being from a certain place
Arsenal FC is more than just a football club to us fans
1 million % The gentleman nailed it. People saw themselves in the team and Arsenal was naturally embracing of all people. It somehow manages to be undeniably, authentically English, while also a natural fit for people from all over the world who value graft, family, team work, and appreciation of what anybody brings no matter what their background. Everybody could see themselves in the team and amongst a fan base that embraces everybody organically. Everybody belongs. Representation cuts so many ways, Black players, African players of course, but also young talent from the community. Surely seeing yourself visually is one thing, but in Bukayo Saka, young people of Asian, Black, White, all ethnicities can see themselves in him as a hard working young person who achieved their dreams. Declan Rice understands it and connects seamlessly with gooners of all backgrounds. Love this club.
For me it was the first 5 star team alphabetically in Fifa 2004. That's all it took as a kid
For me its because of the playstyle during Wengers era. So beautiful to watch, so mezmerizing.
34 years a gooner from Kenya. . . This victory felt more than the invincibles because at the time we didn't know how big a fit it was. . . 22 years later and it makes it so much sweeter.
Arsenal gained global fame in the 1930s, their first period of domination. That enshrined their initial reputation as 'The Bank of England' club – not just being successful, but doing things the right way, 'The Arsenal Way'. Then, in the late 70s and early 80s, when English football was dogged by hooliganism and prejudice, Arsenal went the other way by embracing young black talent with the likes of Brendan Batson, Paul Davis, David Rocastle, Mickey Thomas and Kevin Campbell, and then went further with the purchase of Ian Wright. Today, Wright's a beloved national treasure, but back then he was a street icon with swag and attitude to burn. Arsenal was visibly emerging as a reflection not just of London, but of a rapidly globalising world with different attitudes. The direction continued rapidly in the mid-90s with the revolutionary appointment of Arséne Wenger as manager and the integration of so many French, and African players. It was a period of technological revolution on the brink of a truly connected world. And the world sat up and took notice not just of how Arsenal played, but also how the club acted. At the same time, the club supported women's football more than any other English club, making the women's team the country's preeminent force. Arsenal is a global football megaclub not just because of its history of success but because of its values, inclusivity and sense of community. They're a reflection of London and the modern world. Other megaclubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Man Utd are dependent primarily on sporting success for their popularity. Barça at least is a reflection of their Catalan identity as much as sporting success, but only Arsenal has global popularity and resonance for its identity and values as much as footballing brilliance. That's how you build the deepest loyalty, identification and, yes, love.
Arsenal has close to 50% football fans in Africa. The only other team can pull this is United. East and Southern Asia as well they have a big fan base 🔴⚪️
Reunited me with friends I had lost touch with 20 years ago. COYG. Arsenal single-handedly teaching the world to love football again.
I always question when people say Real Madrid and Barcelona are the biggest teams in world. Firstly they get nowhere near global viewership of the Premier League teams, which is the first red flag in the claim and the fact TV companies around the world pay more for the Premier League TV rights suggests these networks know English teams are far bigger globally. People confuse Real Madrid and Barcelona being richer because they don’t share their TV money with them being more popular. English teams out sell them in global merchandise and get far bigger globally viewership. That is why when Barcelona and Real Madrid win something there isn’t the huge global parties like when English teams win something because English teams have a global hardcore support that Spanish teams dream of because outside of Latin America, Real Madrid and Barcelona have been irrelevant since Messi left.
I've been an Arsenal supporter since 1996 and I loved every single season, even the very lean ones. I loved Chamakh, Sanogo, Gervinho, Santos, and all the misfits Wenger brought on board. I loved the signings which came out of nowehere like Arshavin, Hleb, Rosicky and Ozil. I loved our style, our grace and our falling apart in april. I loved it all. But I won't celebrate until we bring the Champions League trophy home. That for me is the biggest achievement. That would make my year.
