Discover seven of the best vintage integrated amplifiers ever made — and why these underrated classics deserve just as much attention as the legendary receivers. In this video, we rank incredible vintage hi-fi integrated amps from Pioneer, Kenwood, McIntosh, Yamaha, Marantz, Sansui, and Accuphase. These amplifiers were built during the golden age of stereo, often using the same quality components, engineering, and craftsmanship found in the most famous receivers of the 1970s — but many still sell for a fraction of the price. From the powerful Pioneer SA-9900 and underrated Kenwood KA-9100 to the iconic Sansui AU-20000 and legendary Accuphase E-202, we break down what makes each amplifier special, including build quality, power output, design, sound, reliability, and collectability. Whether you are a vintage audio collector, hi-fi enthusiast, stereo repair fan, or just getting into classic audio gear, this list is packed with amplifiers worth knowing about. McIntosh built its first integrated Amp in the sixties. I bought my My 5100 in February, 1968. And I still have with my 1978 Klipsch Cornwalls.
I have a Yamaha ca-1010, the little brother to the 2010, and it also has the class A feature. Love it.
Another great video! I have been a subscriber of your channel for a few years now. Was a great surprise to see one of my photos in your video. The top shot of the McIntosh MA6100 that was recapped. Guessing it came off of one of the Audio Mart listings I had. Looks like it was from a 2023 listing. I stopped selling there & decided to go with eBay alone. Keep up the amazing content. 👍😎
The first McIntosh integrated amp was actually the MA230 released in 1963. It has a tube power amp and a solid state preamp.
Thanks Kevin. I really enjoy your videos👍
Glad you have a Pioneer on this list. I have it's little brother, the SA-8500II. It is a great amp!
I've got a Sansui AU-7500 and it's no slouch either... punches well above it's ratings and still sounds great. Thanks again and regards.
I have the Yamaha 777 and the Yamaha 2090 love them both
Had both the Kenwood KA-9100 and the Sansui AU-20000. Hard to pick the best. Always wanted an Accuphase but never had the cash at the time. Usually mated the KA-9100 to a Nikko Beta II preamp along with Cerwin Vega speakers. Still have the Nikko preamp.
Thanks for the video. I have bought a number of used AVRs and they’ve worked out very well. I have gotten into surround sound systems so I prefer newer AVRs that can handle 7 channels or more. I loved Marantz when I started out as a Kid. I finally got one. The Cinema 30. It’s beautiful, works and sounds great. Very happy living the dream. Be well and rock on.
I had the KA9100 with the wood case for about a year. Loved it. If I remember correctly, it powered numerous tough loads with ease, including stacked Large Advents and Acoustats. I even had a matching tuner. I have moved on from a lot of gear and I will never forget that 9100.
Miss my Yamaha CA 810, class A only had 10 watts but it was probably the best sounding amp I ever owned.
Harman Kardon PM650 and 660 are really awesome. They are capable of easily driving low impedance speakers like 1980s Infinity RS series, and they have a classic look and feel. I loved looking at and listening to them back in the early 1980s, and I bought both the 650&660 in the last few years and enjoy them immensely.
I had an MA6100 from a well known reseller during first year of pandemic. It was a dog and sounded terrible, even after sending it back to them and getting it back after repair. I really wish I had known back then what I know about repairing stereos. Sold it and ended up keeping my HH Scott tube 299, which sounded like magic with Klipsch’s.
Surprised not to see one of the most unique integrated amps ever made - NEC A10
Thanks Kevin! Great job as always, very informative n stuff👍 Congrats on landmark anniversary!
Great video. Thanks
Thanks for another very interesting video Skylabs folks. I especially enjoyed the Sansui background information. Keep up the good work!
I like the Kenwoods that are high speed and dc coupled. I have a KA-501 and a KA-1000. My first stereo back in the 70's was a Fisher 150 receiver and a Garrard Lab 80 turntable and a pair of empty speaker cabinets from Olsen electronics that were actually Large Advent cabinets and I put blue woofers with wizzer cones and piezo tweeters in those cabinets and sound was ok. Next system was a JVC JRS-201 receiver with Large Advents and a Dual 506. then I went seperates with a Rappaport preamp.
The McIntosh MA-5100 came out before the 6100.
