People often jump to blaming the turning vehicle simply because a motorcycle is involved, but excessive speed changes the entire context of reaction time and visibility. The motorcyclist was riding in the middle lane of a three-lane roadway, and had he been traveling at a reasonable and legal speed, he likely would have recognized the vehicle beginning its turn far sooner and had ample time to slow down safely. Instead, the footage shows him barely avoiding the collision, which strongly suggests he was closing distance far too quickly for surrounding drivers to reasonably judge his approach. This is one of the biggest issues with reckless motorcycle riding: riders often argue that drivers “didn’t see them,” while simultaneously traveling at speeds that make safe judgment nearly impossible. A motorcycle is already smaller and harder to detect than a car, meaning the rider has an even greater responsibility to remain predictable, visible, and within speeds that other motorists can realistically react to. Perception of speed may feel different on a motorcycle, but to everyone else on the road, velocity and closing distance are very real. If you are moving so fast that another driver cannot accurately determine whether they can safely turn or merge, then you are creating the hazard. Based on that, the motorcyclist appears to be overwhelmingly at fault, and reckless speeding of that level absolutely deserves legal consequences.
