That is completely irresponsible of property management. You should definitely ask them for a month’s rent discount for your troubles. You didn’t lose a key, their programmed device did not allow you to enter the premises you pay for.

I would have checked into a motel and sent him the bill

the apartment complex should have at least offered to pay for a hotel for you, it’s their fault this happened in the first place

That's a completely unacceptable and dangerous situation. I can't believe your building management is so utterly incompetent and careless about your safety. I'm sure your Mom will be in a rage about this. I'm glad you're back in and safe now, but this should never have happened and they owe you some answers, and assurance this will never happen again, to you or any other tenant! So furious for you, as a Mom!!

A Technician should be on call after the office closes. They put you and any other single person in your building in serious danger.

You should have gotten a hotel and asked for reimbursement

Girrrl I would have been calling them every half hour on the dot like wtf is the point of an emergency line if they cant respond to an emergency in a timely manner 😭

Probably would have gotten a hotel or gone to family member, even if it’s a few hours away. Much safer options than driving around tired in the middle of the night.

I would be constantly thinking that it may happen again.

Oh Lana! You poor thing. What a night. I’m so glad you’re back home safe. Hope you can spend your day resting and recovering!

Ask for compensation for everything you spent while locked out. If it’s a good management company, they should have no issues reimbursing you. At least, I would. As a high end apartment building assistant manager

Hello all :) About to go to sleep for the first time in over 35 hours but just wanted to clarify a few things: I was out until 1:15 AM driving my mom and sister to the airport. They are gone this weekend. I discovered I was locked out once I got home. Had they been home, I would've just drove straight there. I do not have a key to their home. This is the second time they're ever both gone away at the same time, so we've never thought to give me an official key because one of them is always there when I visit. Why didn't you: Go to a hotel? - I could not have imagined this would take 9 hours. I thought it would be done by 4 AM latest, they also kept promising someone would call. By the time I realized they weren't calling, it wasn't financially worth it, hotels in my area are around $200/night. I'd rather skip one night of sleep honestly, especially if I'm getting there at 5 AM. Sleep in your parking garage? - My parking garage is freezing cold, last month there was a break in where things got stolen, I had no blankets, and most of all: there's no cell phone service in an underground parking garage! I also know myself and my sleep habits and it's unlikely I'd even be able to fall asleep. Stay in your lobby? We are all different. Some people could've stayed there all night and felt good with that, I stayed in my lobby for 2 hours and couldn't take it anymore. I can't stay stagnant that long. I love driving, I say it all the time, night drives don't scare me, and it's safer to be moving in my opinion. Please also keep in mind I worked 2 AM closing shifts at the movie theater for almost 5 years, and have solo road tripped many states alone at night! While I'm cautious, my town does not scare me. Thank you to the lovely people who have been so nice and helpful! It was a difficult night, but I'm grateful for you. Also very excited to go to sleep right now. Goodnight everyone ❤️

You should have told the officer what was happening in regards to your property manager... a call from the Police Dept. would have gotten results quickly. 🤷🏽‍♂️

My apartment complex has onsite maintenance that’s on call 24/7. That’s crazy!

This just happened to me, I just moved in a couple of weeks ago. I am not from this area and have no family close by I went to the Police Station because I just didn’t know what to do. They were great! They called the 24 hour emergency number after I tried several times. Interestingly enough the property manager was there within the hour. The police said to the manager, this was a dangerous situation. If emergency services needed in the building and there was no access, the management company could be held accountable. The officer was filing an investigation report and a detective from the department would be following up with the management company. I was hesitant about going to the police but they said I did the right thing.

I'm confused. Couldn't she stay in the lobby or check into a hotel?

It’s completely unacceptable for a property manager to handle a lockout situation this way. If a tenant had the ability to call a locksmith immediately because management took far too long to respond, then the property manager should absolutely reimburse and compensate them for that expense. This isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a serious safety issue. As others have pointed out, what if someone left the stove on, had a pet trapped inside, or there was another emergency situation? Tenants deserve timely assistance and professional communication, especially in situations that directly impact their safety and access to their home. Glad you’re safe and sound!!
