Have you ever checked out Space Tyrant? It's a very quirky tongue in cheek humorous turn based game of galactic conquest. Like Slipways, it allows for short discrete sessions with some rogue-lite mechanisms unlocking new features from game to game. It's worth a look, if you haven't. I normally like deeper games, but when I have no energy or brain power but just want to scratch that evil space conquest itch, I find myself opening this one.
The absense of Space Haven is criminal. *The* space game of the year.
What I want is crimson skies , but in space.

Besides just the amazing sci-fi theme, games like this allow for so many different gameplay ideas and everything from top down mass strategy to mid scale tactical battles and even first person or third person adventures. This is why I love sci-fi so much myself

How is Starsector not on this list? Most disappointing.
There are so many incredible indie games that, given the vast selection, it’s hard to pinpoint the best ones. Most of these games are unique in their own way and offer something that others don’t, something that’s never been done before, yet they receive little attention and are hardly known.
Starsector. Easy to miss as it is not on Steam

Ixion is definitely one that belongs up here, very fun and challenging. You command a big ass O'Neill cylinder ship/station that was set to make a hyperspace jump to alpha centauri and back, only when the ship left it broke the moon and destroyed Earth, and you came back 250 years later due to a time dilation in the jump and now you have to keep the Ixion operational whilst finding humans in cryopods to rebuild civilization, it's really good.
