Turkish Matt - I am an idiot, think very carefully before listening to anything I say, but mortgage debt is long term debt. If you sell a car, you can buy another car in a while if things improve, if you tack it on your mortgage, it’ll cost you loads more in the long run (and believe me, you’ll get old quicker than you think - I was forever young until I woke up one day and realised most people at work were younger than me and the people I used to ask about things were gone, and people were asking me about things instead).

This is why you ALWAYS do your company as an LTD (private limited company). That way if the company burns down you lose your business but you entire person finance is safe. House, savings, car and so on. You literally drive home and cry. But you keep everything. Extremely important!

Matt, make sure you investigate the mortgage rates well, you may well be able to get a better rate than 5%. Personally I would only go for a two year fixed as the markets are all over the place

Dude I felt that ending so much. Been building up the business for 8 years. 2023 really took off, 24/25 were great finances finally sorted and after all the years of 60-90 hour weeks if would have all been worth it. I never wanted staff because I just wanted to produce, not manage. Ended up with a couple contractors long term and paid them 2x+ market rate to balance for insecurity of not being employed . I was finally starting to feel sane again when the corp tax rate jumped 6% (marginal relief totally miss-sold) and div went up 2% and going up again now. As the director I was paying a lower rate of tax vs a PAYE under the previous system, but only by a low few % and I never felt guilty about that because to me it was a small relief for the hundreds of hours a year I work I can't bill for. The tax the guys working for me was significant as they were around 6 figure income each and I was paying big numbers too. The timing of that tax hike broke my moral, I felt as soon as what felt like nearly killing myself at times finally paid off a rug was pulled and just to get back to the previous years income would mean even more work, while prices of everything started shooting up at the same time. It's heartbreaking but I've given it up, found an exit for my contractors and stopped working in Jan this year. Starting a job as an employee again in a month of so after some mental health time off and bit of help from the GP. I've been hoping election after election labour as the only other real choice at the time under FPTP would tip the tories out, Brexit has been the biggest source of my despair over the years as we used to do so much work in Europe, that gradually dried up to nothing as clients found more local suppliers for less hassle even though we are top class at what we make. Most our upstream parts come from France/Germany which has also been a nightmare. I'm taking a job for 3 days a week as I won't work above the 20% tax bracket if I can avoid it. I did everything as best I could and at every opportunity decisions were made out of my control that caused me stress and hardship. I can't leave the UK yet for other personal reasons, but I'm done pushing for more. There will be a time in the future when I can go and I'm just going to coast doing the bare minimum up to then, and look after my family. And I'm in a comparatively privileged position, yes I worked myself to breaking point, but SO MANY people here are doing that everyday and still can't even pay the bills.
