Did the same about 7 months ago. Got a chery tiggo 7 phev. My travel cost changed from 3000 a month to like 500. I do charge daily though. This is every morning to drain the last bit of power out of my solar system. Costs would be different though if I charged in bulk and not the small top up every morning.

I reject your premise the 'equivalent petrol car' = same acceleration as the electric one. We know electric has good accel. R30000 ($1500) is nothing if you compare the price of a low cost sedan vs a low cost EV. More like R300000.
