Ahh so that's how you get the brushes back in.
It's a really good move to scrape between the commutator poles, then use something hard and round and small to break the edges of the poles. It'll keep the commutator from chewing on the brushes.
I didnt know they still sold rebuild kits til I saw a mechanic I worked with rebuild one vs wait a day for the replacement. We should be repairing all of them cause the rebuild kits are like $15.

We used to do this back in the 70s. After you clean up the commutator, use a ground down hacksaw blade to carefully carve away some of the insulator between the poles. Just a slight Groove Karma to prevent the elements from shorting against each other with carbon
In Spain even the dealers don’t put new starters. They have 2 in stock remanufactured. They keep yours and is sent to be repaired. Starters and alternators all remanufactured

As long as the case hasnt delaminated you can. Rebuilt starters for years
next time you rebuild electric motors, add silicone grease or dielectric grease for electronics. not automotive grease. that looks bone dry. silicone grease have additives in it that prevent oxidation which is what you want for good electrical contacts.
I used to work in a starter and alternator repair shop. Glad to see there is still some open, been many a years since I seen a shop that does rebuilds
In 1963 my Grandfather showed me how to rebuild starters. We went to the parts store, they had the kit, I clearly recall it was $3.79. And the two of us took the starter apart on his work bench and had it back together in short order. He installed it on an old ford. I must have done dozens of them over the years and saved a fortune. 😊😊
Man the 2.4 DOHC engine is seriously one of the best motors in this world
My car starter stopped working one day I simply took it apart cleaned it really good cleaned up the commutators and the brushes and it's been doing great now for about six months not an issue

I did a similar thing with my rear window motor of my vw passat b4 1995. The thing just stopped working and dropped the window down and wouldn't go up. I disassembled it removed the cables and after putting it back together it fixed it's self. Later it happend again and this time I disassembled it fully and I found that water had made it's way in the motor it's self. Cleaned it with a little circuit cleaner( some spray for electronics) and shit worked. It's a little slow but for of 30 years hard work and self healing abilities I can't be mad😅
I was 16 tried to rebuild starter On a d15 single cam Honda engine. And it just went up in smoke lol
