If the driver passes out: Civilian passenger: Grab the steering wheel, toss one leg over the center console, and mount it like a saddle. From there, take control of the wheel and carefully steer the vehicle to a safe stop. Priority is survival and minimizing harm. Military passenger: Same initial moveβmount the center console and take the wheelβbut instead of braking, punch the accelerator. Return fire while using your wounded battle buddy as a makeshift booster seat. Mission first. Adapt. Overcome.

If you keep the button depressed, the hand brake is actually excellent for this scenerio. Everyone should practice this BEFORE an emergency, in fact. Especially if there is a console in the middle. Because it would be dangerous to try to reach the pedals over a console, especially with the deadweight of the passed out driver's legs in the way.
