Best Colin McCrae memory? Pulling up beside him at the lights when on my Suzuki Street Magic. He was in the Repsol Focus here for Rally NZ. When the lights went green I got in front of him and then did a wheelie to the next set of lights about a kilometer away. He pulled up next to at the next set of lights and gave me the thumbs up. Sweet

My McRae story was when I went to the Wales Rally in 2002. Me, my Dad and my Uncle were all perched on the side of this hill overlooking the track. Me being nine, I needed a pee. So I waited for the gap in steward whistles, hurried across the track, climbed the other side, did my thing and came back down. As I was coming down the hill on my arse, I hear that whistle, my eyes met my dad's across the other side, he's shouting at me to stay where I am, so I did. I hear anti-lag, see headlights, a flash of Martini colours, followed by Colin executing the perfect slide about four feet away. It was like time slowed down, but it was less than a few seconds. I'd been playing the Colin McRae Rally game on PS1 since I was about four. I knew every single Impreza and Evo in my area. I religiously watched it on TV and had VHS tapes of historic rally so knew about the Group B era with the Quattro and the Delta S4. Even now, the sound of an Impreza getting spanked is nostalgic to me because it was of an era we'll never really get again.
I remember back in the day, checking the his record on of the WRC seasons and it read something like this: DNF, DNF, DNF, 1st, DNF, 1st, DNF, DNF, 1st, DNF, DNF, 1st. Guy was completely insane!
There were McRae and Senna fans, and there were Makinen and Prost fans.
Prodrive David Richards claimed AGES ago that in motorsports, it's not simply the raw # of victories accumulated, it's the dogged, persistent determination that wins loyal fans.
X Games, Colin vs travis. Rolls on stage and whilst rolling over, engages 1st gear to launch when the car is back on all 4. The list is endless with his memorable moments. He stayed not far from me and watching colin and alistair in 2006 at a show in Lanark was a great memory and shaed with alastair recently and we both vould not believe that was over 20years ago. Legend!
Not forgotten. Never will. Had the chance to see him at some WRC rallies. What a unique style ❤
He drove like he had extra lives
Acropolis rally in the 90's, standing on top of a small round hill about 40 feet above the course which went round about 60% of the hill in a series of short straights joined by bends. The world's best at the time, Sainz, Kankkunen, Auriol etc all made a great series of perfectly timed turns and squirts of power to get round. Colin threw it in about 50 yards before the first bend and did the lot in one constant sweep clipping every apex and brushing the outside of the middle of the straights which doubled as exit points and turn-in points combined. There was a difference! Would be interesting to see Nicky's pace notes to see whether that was listed as 5 little bends or one big one.
6:20 removing a bent part of the suspension and straightening it by putting it between two rocks and dropping a heavier rock on it on the side of the road is freaking awesome. thats why you want a driver that understands cars/ works on cars for rally. incredible stuff.
We need a Colin McRae movie
The Bunnings jumps at Rally Australia. this was also roughly the time Ken Block was doing "Stunt Junkies". Ken jumped once, pancaked the car and hurt himself. Colin jumped higher, longer and more often and still had 10+ miles of stage to run before he was done! To quote Nicky Grist "That was high, man! I got a headache!"
Had Colin McRae rally 2005 on the PS2 , arguably one of the best racing games on PS2 , the graphics, the mechanics and feel.. my dad my brother and I would play that game for hours... My dad would tell me about Colin McRae and loves the game, RIP 🕊️
