I vaguely remember James Rolfe saying one time that the AVGN character was basically perpetually angry because he was looking back at his own childhood games and realizing none of them were quite as good as he remembered So ironically kinda the opposite of the "they got everything right back then" mentality

Eh, the AVGN was never really part of the “games were so much better back then” conversation. If anything, the theme of his show was “hey our childhoods had cool stuff, but there was a lot of garbage too,” which I appreciate. I got the “old games are better” shtick a lot more from ScrewAttack back in the day.
So much nostalgia just boils down to survivourship bias

I don’t know what Scott is talking about. I’ve got tons of time. After I got rid of all my responsibilities, kicked my family to the curb, and stopped making plans with friends, my schedule freed up real quick.
If we had social media back in the 90s, everyone would be making clickbait videos about Mascotslop, arguing about whether or not a 2D platformer like Sonic 2 is worth $70, and complaining that Quake is poorly optimized because the $3,000 PC they bought 2 years ago literally can't run it
I like when I say I love an old game, and someone says, "You only like it because you played it as a kid" when in reality I played it for the first time like last year.
