I had this happen to me my brakes failed when I was driving so I just slowly applied the hand brake to stop it was pretty scary I just went to use my brakes then nothing
To be fair, people would be desperate to stop, even if their trans failed. I would just aim for something soft or semi solid.

basically: manual - downshift, to a varying gear depending on how urgent it is, and when at a low speed, apply the handbrake or reverse and bring up the clutch slightly. automatic: handbrake if possible (gently). EV/hybrid: regenerative braking. auto with no handbrake? yeah youre kind of fucked

New automatics have manual mode like Toyota Corolla has manual mode where you can have the car on manual without clot and just lower the gear. It’s very good.

If you knoe your breaks are gone put the hazard lights on asap so people around you know you have issues don't turn hazards on if you are slow mainly of freeways
