The 1980s "Gold Trim" Dealer Craze During the late '80s and early '90s, dealership service departments discovered a massive profit center: aftermarket gold plating. Dealerships frequently took brand-new, solid black cars right off the transport truck and modified them to create "limited editions" that they could mark up on the showroom floor. They used an 18k or 24k gold electroplating kit to change the factory silver chrome emblems to gold. They added matching gold metallic pinstriping down the body lines.
