Over the decades there have been industry changes that have forced workers, yes the ones with families to feed and take care of, forced to realize they have became obsolete, therefore dispensable. Some of those today are retired and are still struggling financially. Good luck to these layoffs because some are going to experience some rather rude awakenings. They will get a picture of who is really controlling markets and prosperity.
I am tired of winning.
20+ years of experience, unemployed for 2 years and burning through my backup savings. Volunteered (foodbanks, immigrant rights work), worked for equity, tried job search councils, reached out to my network, etc. Not a lot of luck with many of these. A good chunk of my network are also unemployed, on the verge of layoffs, or scared. The tech job market (and I believe it is the same across many job markets) is brutal at the moment. There are more people looking than there are jobs available. It's quite simple. Regardless, I remain optimistic and know we will ride this one out. Wishing you all the best, in the mean time.
The solution is to get a job: 1) That has a stigma against doing it. 2) That's perceived as 'too smart for them' 3) That people don't want to do. Programming used to be in category 2. Now other things are.
Technological advances have eliminated jobs for decades. This didn't become a big issue until high paying sit down jobs were eliminated.
Meanwhile the tech ceos are earning record salary while reporting highest “profits” in the company’s history.
The golden children of the early 2010s now are wedding planners
I've been laid off 3 times since 2019. People keep saying I just got really unlucky, but now I always assume I won't wake up to a job whenever I go to bed. Restructuring my expectations and planning has really made a difference.
That smile at 3:42 is insanely creepy. It's the dreaded "I know it's hopeless for you but I'm going to do my darnedest to pretend otherwise" smile.
Don't volunteer. Concentrate on getting a paying job.
Good to stay informed.
"Experts" - Haven't seen this in 45 years - bro, there was no such thing as an Office Computer job 45 years ago
Indian tech workers are not complaining in India.
Don’t worry about not feeding yourself just volunteer and feed your soul😂🥴
The new book, The Bubble That Broke The Bank, argues that the layoffs are colliding with the real estate crash of 2026. Things will stagnate for 5 years! Run and don't walk.
Volunteering when you need a job to eat and pay the bills is insanity!
Your employer is working furiously to get rid of your job. They don't have to pay robots and computers who can work 24/7.
That's why I got out of the tech industry in the early 2000s... three layoffs in one year! I was done!
A real possibility is to get a job at McDonald’s, Home Depot, Delivering Goods, Warehouse, and…
I know several people who have been looking for jobs for many months with many exhaustive interviews to no avail. One even had a job interview, and many days and nights stayed up late to prepare for that, before his wedding day. Other was lucky to have job that he came to work the day after his wedding. The job market is brutal.
