Just like in the movie Wall Street "Greed is Good". Companies realized that they can push people to work harder for cheaper rates if they eliminate all other options to them. So remaining employees must now work harder like slaves or else.

Indeed - when so-called "smartphones" started ICT / related careers fell flat.

Things are bad and they're getting worse, ... which seems to have been the norm since the dawn of time.

The real question is what is the geographic distribution of these layoffs and what about the housing market in those regions. Meta expenses are the monthly mortgage payments for banks and servicers.

Now imagine being Iranian abroad but literally every person you care about living in Iran... and you're a recent graduate with less than 1 years of work experience in tech in a job that is very easy to be replaced by AI and you have very little saved up and you're all alone.

I've never understood netflix - they have 2,000 software engineers. The have a stable interface that has worked for over a decade, how many of those 2000 software guys are sitting on their hands collecting a paycheck, hiding the targets on their worthless backs.

When you keep allowing bigger companies acquire every startup, so as to prevent future competition, you limit growth, and prospects of job creation. One large company acquiring 3 startups will focus on vertical integration, and streamlining, while startups allowed to independently scale will scale exponentially with respect to job creation, and otherwise.

If "back in your day" means 15-20 years ago, then your experience is not congruent with how things are done today, so of course you don't understand. I witnessed first hand how an entire team of competent software engineers (about 15 people) was fired simply because some mid managers decided that they will simply "relocate" the project in India for a fraction of the previous budget.
