This week, it is two huge topics that dominate the discussion. For those of you with a passion for football, the chaos engulfing Real Madrid at the moment on multiple fronts will no doubt have caught your attention. From the 70m signatures on a petition to remove Mbappe from the club to the Tchouameni/Valverde fight that ended up in hospital, not to mention the return of Jose Mourinho, there is a bucket load to dive into. While that may fall more on the gossip side, it is the product of the club’s management and the culture that exists that clearly runs from the President to the dressing room. Add to this the increasingly heated dispute between tennis players and the Grand Slams over their pay packets, and we have ourselves a breakdown. ---------------------------------------------------- Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 02:06 PIF Confirms End Of Funding For LIV Golf! 05:29 Football Catchup 12:31 Real Madrid 2026: Fights, Petitions & Mourinho Rumours 39:49 Tennis in Revolt: Players vs Prize Money ---------------------------------------------------- Disclaimer: The content of this podcast is intended as commentary and opinion on matters of public interest in the sports industry. Would welcome beers on this podcast weekly
These guys are brilliant. One of the best podcasts around.
Cheers🍻 You guys definatly deserve a beer. I love to listen to this show👌
Why am I just finding this podcast? It’s informative and well thought out. Thank you.
The best Podcast by far 🔥 One thing that feels massively under the radar this season across Europe: We’re suddenly seeing smaller clubs seriously challenge traditional powers in multiple leagues at the same time. AGF in Denmark, Viking in Norway, Mjällby in Sweden, Hearts in Scotland, Lask in Austria, Thun in Switzerland, even Como in Italy with a completely different recruitment philosophy. Feels less like a coincidence and more like a structural shift. Smaller clubs seem far more willing to modernize recruitment, use data, build clear identities and think internationally, while a lot of bigger clubs still rely on legacy, budgets and short term decisions. Would be really interesting to hear your thoughts on whether we’re entering an era where structure and strategy start closing the gap to financial dominance, especially outside the top 5 leagues.
Best football podcast on YouTube
I would love these guys to do segment on the finances of Barcelona and how they still manage to operate at a top level. Plus, the downfall of Serie A and some of the giant clubs there like Juventus and Milan. They can't compete anymore with the elite.
Ssssh- My favourite show is on
Brilliant always. Spell check your subtitles. Some free-range apostrophes in there.
To stand for the presidency of Real Madrid, candidates must meet provide a bank guarantee worth 15% of the club’s annual budget, which is approximately €187 million, and the guarantee must be backed entirely by the candidate’s personal assets. This is the crucial issue. However, the President must have been a member of Real Madrid for at least 20 years. and hold Spanish nationality.
Refering to the Tennis section when Messi was refered to as the example of a player drawing attention to the league, the messi effect is also not as strong as its made out (on attendance i mean, Apple dont release streaming numbers but this is relevant when talking about "will people go to Wimbledon without the stars)". In 2022 pre-Messi the average attendance was 21,033. Messi joined in Summer 2023 mid-season. The mean that season? 22,111. This season MLS has a mean attendance of 21,686.
These guys are so good at talking about sport. It’s very impressive.
Mourinho experiment isn't going to work. It may at first, but then it quickly goes off the rail, bc the real side lacks intelligent leaders. They had Modric and Kroos among other experienced pro's, who could deal with tactical problems on their own. Ancelotti told the players to sort it out on the break, and went for a cigar. The current players will instead start a fight amongst each other.
I’m very much enjoying this pod, clearly the way Charlie came across in Sunderland til I die wasn’t quite accurate. Great listen, keep it up
Fantastic research and analysis once again guys so thank you !. One aspect you didn't mention however is that you don't want to created an environment where the lower ranking Tennis players are not there to win but to earn a much better salary than a normal job and travel the world otherwise what is the point in associations putting the vast percentage of revenues back into grass roots development which breeds the vast majority seeing Tennis just as a good job. Secondly there is the aspect of Tennis being a sport you can bet on and if a lot of the participants are not particularly there to win then that creates an unfair market to be exploited.
To stand in Real Madrid presidential election one needs to post a financial guarantee of 15% of Real Madrid's turnover i.e. about €190 million. Explains why Perez is unopposed.
Love you podcast, I think you will find Kabaddi and pro kabaddi league's rise here in India to be a very interesting business case, do check it out if you have time. Love your podcast
The galacticos were "a team" ? They didn't win shit. Zidane won one league title and on CL with RM, Ronaldo only won one league title (no CL). Zidane cost 75M€ in a year where their total revenue were 150M€. It was an absolute joke, way worse than it is now. They were a failure is what they were. Perez was the same back then, prioritizing big names over what the team needed (Makelele).
Also worth noting that basing tennis player prize money on revenue and not profit, is already hugely generous. The costs these tournaments incur will be colossal. Many of the costs are to make the players and their teams happy when they are onsite.
A pint well deserved. Would love to have a glas with you and talk about Sport. Great podcast.
