So a bit of lore that some people may not get: before making subnautica, Unknown Worlds made a Mod for Halflife, then a standalone game sequel, called "Natural Selection", which was a FPS/RTS hybrid about human soldiers vs alien monsters. (there was even in-game posters for it in Subnautica 1). The Monsters in that game are called the Kharaa... the same Kharaa that was quarantined on 4546B. Natural Selection 2 is not only 100% canon to the Subnautica Story, but is a direct prequel (or is still actively occuring) during the events of Subnautica 2. and the Kharaa bacterium made it off world and mutated into multicellular organisms, and it is hinted that this mutated Kharaa nearly caused a galactic-scale mass-extinction event, and Altera sent out you and the Cicada to find a new planet to terraform and repopulate
