It's different when you're watching TV and you as the viewer knows the character but in reality, nepotism usually leads to a sense of entitlement and either more of the same, or even worse. Because of that, understanding the perspective of both characters is easy.

This is why cell phones are a great tool. The voice record feature on every phone makes it perfect to record conduct like this. Admitting you are holding a grudge to a subordinate leads to legal issues or worse. That entire fire station could walk off the job, then the chief is responsible for poor leadership.

So when would they meet if they're always a different shift?

He should have just stuck to being professional without making personal, and left it at that, the subordinate would have fell in line and the superior would have just looked like he was being a justifiable hard ass and everything would have played out after everyone settled into the hierarchical roles, things would have smoothed over, there would have been an understanding and they would have probably had beers after their shift in a year or 2. Hierarchy is not a power trip, it is what it is.

So basically "I am an immature egomaniac that got my feewings hurt one time by a superior so now I am gonna abuse my authority to take out my pettiness on his kid years later."

Switching from being a victim (in your opinion) to victimizing others is always such a wonderful thing. /s Discrimination for any reason is wrong - race, gender, butt-hurt feelings.
