Independent Trailer Steering 🏗️

Original video credit: IG/@richad_117. Rear steer operation is a specialized job used in heavy transport for moving oversized cargo like wind turbine blades, which can exceed 200 feet in length. A standard truck and trailer cannot handle turns safely, so the rear of the load is supported by a separate wheeled dolly with its own steering system. A second operator, known as a steerman, controls this rear unit from a small cabin mounted near the back. While the front driver pulls the load, the steerman actively steers the rear wheels, often counter-steering to guide the long, rigid cargo through tight turns and obstacles. They sit low to the ground and coordinate constantly with the front driver and escort vehicles via radio, keeping both ends of the transport aligned and under control.
