The problem with the "Cliff Murder" story is that the police couldn't work with what Reddit gave them due to all of that being circumstantial evidence. You wouldn't be able to prove without a reasonable doubt that all of that information directly linked to the missing kid unless you make a bunch of assumptions in regards to what happened. In court, you need to convince a jury the truth of the situation in a manner that makes complete sense, or at least, makes sense from their collective perspective. While circumstantial evidence can get convictions, they still need to be logically sound at their core.

tbf, sometimes companies DO be making the stereotypical evil company documents... Such as most notably probably Ford with their exploding vehicles and them literally doing a cost-benefit analysis to determine that allowing people to burn in their vehicles and sue their company would be more profitable than repairing the problem in the vehicles they'd already manufactured...
