The Byford incident is so fucking sad. It wasn’t that people didn’t know there was people inside, it’s that the diving bell wasn’t properly secured to the station. When the pressure seal wasn’t aligned with the station properly and opened, that’s when it “exploded”. The bell shot off from the station like a bomb killing one of the two divers outside instantly, the second had their entire right side obliterated and they were the only survivor. Everybody inside died instantly with one at the entrance getting turned into jelly as he was forced through the porthole about half his size, stomach first. The others near the bunks had the fat in their body flash boiled, literally cooked from the inside out. RIP to all those men and thank god it was instant because it’s the most terrifying thing I can imagine.
