Students were tasked with conceiving, planning, and producing an original short film inspired by the stylistic and thematic conventions of classic film noir. This assignment required them to apply storytelling, cinematography, lighting, editing, sound design, and collaborative filmmaking skills to create a complete, self-contained cinematic work. Students began by developing an original story concept that included characters, setting, conflict, and resolution. They focused on crafting a compelling narrative while incorporating themes commonly associated with noir films, such as crime, deception, corruption, obsession, betrayal, and moral ambiguity. Emphasis was placed on creating layered characters and maintaining suspense throughout the story. The project also required students to study and apply the visual language of film noir. Students experimented with low-key lighting, high-contrast imagery, shadows, silhouettes, reflections, and dramatic camera angles to establish mood and atmosphere. Careful attention was given to framing, composition, and movement in order to create visually engaging scenes that reflected the tension and emotional complexity of the genre. Students explored additional noir storytelling techniques including voice-over narration, flashbacks, nonlinear storytelling, and suspenseful pacing. Sound design and music selection were used intentionally to strengthen tone, emotion, and dramatic impact. Throughout the production process, students participated in all phases of filmmaking, including screenwriting, storyboarding, production planning, directing, cinematography, acting, editing, and post-production. Collaboration, creativity, preparation, and technical execution were essential components of the assignment. The completed films demonstrated each group’s ability to combine narrative storytelling with cinematic technique while successfully capturing the distinctive atmosphere and style of film noir.
